Heading to Seattle for 3 Days of Walking

Friday, April 25th, 2008

The penguin and I will be participating in a Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-day walk In September, 2008. It’s 3 days walking 60 miles and loads of pink!

I have joined up with a fabulous group, Affiliate Marketers Give Back to help raise funds for the cure and I’m taking the penguin with me. We’re so excited to get involved this year!

I will be blogging about my experiences along the way including my adventures in training - it’s amazing how many muscles there are in my body that I don’t use regularly when I sit at this computer. I had no idea! They will all be in shape by September, I promise! I will even try to add in some videos from time to time — be prepared, I am not a professional film maker.

I’d love you to get involved and support me in this journey!

You can sponsor me by visiting my special donation page

Net proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust, funding important breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment. Every dollar helps - I would really love all the support I can get!

About donating…

  • All donors will be listed on my Thank You page.
  • For individuals or companies interested in larger sponsorship benefits - You can sponsor a logo spot on our team shirts for $1000.00. There are 12 team member who will all be wearing these shirts for the entire 3 days.

More ways you can help..

  • Purchase any of my Pink Ribbon Penguin or other Breast Cancer awareness products now through August 15th, 2008 and 100% of my commissions will be donated to our team fund.
  • Spread the word by posting a link on your own site about our team (tell them JGoode sent you ~grin)
  • Purchase something from our team shop - 100% of the shop commissions will be donated to the team.
  • Visit PinkRibbonPenguins.com to read about my progress, updates on donations and more.
  • Watch for other for-purchase items as well as additional sponsorship logo options in the near future.

Please share your experiences and thoughts - this is a journey for us all and I am excited to share my portion of it with you!

Love the Earth Every Day

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

I grew up understanding about conservation. I regularly heard basic little things we could do every day to help conserve energy “turn off the lights!” or “dont leave food on your plate” or don’t let the water just run”. Occassionally my mom would go through health food kicks where organic and natural were the way things would be — she even worked in a health food store for a while - which I LOVED to hang out in.

Every Day Earth Day Framed Tile

But now, as an adult, I am understanding the deeper message, the bigger importance, and I hope I can somehow pass the message on to my own children… but it’s not easy. Although conservation and “earth friendly” options are available, it’s not the norm and by no means always an easy option to move forward with. It’s almost trendy at this point… and especially on days like today… to be concerned with the world around us. For many, however, a few weeks from now the good intentions get pushed aside by time constraints, price differences and general motivation. Sometimes we have all the right thoughts, but the options we want just aren’t options within our reach.

Love the Earth Penguin Tote Bag

So I started thinking today… what can we do, what habits can we replace or start new just to begin to make a difference in our own individual little worlds? Thanks to some great conversations with friends and a lot of insight from media today, here are some simple ideas I think we could all put on our list to at least try..

  • Use items that can be reused rather than throw away items whenever possible
  • Don’t buy styrofoam and plastic when there are biodegradable option
  • Buy recycled items whenever possible
  • Carpool whenever possible
  • Know what you are buying…

Some product Ideas that I can recommend from my own collections…

  • Tote Bags - use the canvas tote bags for groceries instead of “paper or plastic”
  • Mugs - carry around the mugs instead of using paper or plastic cups

Happy Valentine’s Day

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

I hope the lil’ love fairy passes by your way today!

Lil Love fairy by JGoode

This piece was inspired by my facination for cutie-pie frilly magical characters. I’ve always truly enjoyed the whimsical cuteness of children’s decor. This illustration is my take on what the love fairy would look like… just big enough to carry in your pocket. She carries with her little bits of magic as she dances about - spreading love where ever she goes. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a lil’ love fairy in your day?

I hope your Valentine’s day is extra special!

Bloggers unite for Kindness

Monday, December 17th, 2007

Today, December 17th, 2007 thousands of bloggers are uniting to share their stories of their own acts of kindness.

bloggers.jpg

“Bloggers Unite is an initiative designed to harness the power of the blogosphere to make the world a better place. ” Read More

So today I’d like to share a neat online organization I just discovered… Donorschoose.org.

donors.jpg

Donors Choose is a non profit oraganization originally started by a school in the Bronx, New York. Teachers can submit proposals for funds and the public can then choose to donate a portion or all of the requested funds. Its a great way to help individual classrooms and make a big difference to the students involved.

As soon as I heard about this site, I got involved. You can search by subject, age, location, keyword and more. I chose a couple different projects to help with. One request inparticular was located right here in Colorado. The teacher requested funds to buy each of her students a new book to read over the holiday break. A good portion of the request had already been fullfilled, so I was able to complete the funding - hopefully just in time for the holidays.

The other inspiring idea on this site is that you can purchase a gift certificate for someone else. Your recipient can then choose which project/s they’d like to support. What a fabulous gift!

I had so much fun reading about the different projects and the teachers wishes for their students. There are so many ways we can help with such a tiny bit of effort, it amazes me how true the statement - little things really can make a difference.

Let the festival of lights begin!

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

Tonight, at sundown, Hanukkah (Chanukah) begins. So, for Tuesday’s Topic today, I say…

Happy Hanukkah to All!

happy-hanukkah.gif

Some fun facts and tid bits of holiday festiveness…

History:
Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, is a celebration of the victory of the Maccabees and the rededication of the Jerusalem Temple. It also commemorates the miracle of the oil that burned for 8 days” - from Holidays.net

Dreidle:
The letter on dreidls outside of Israel stand for “A great miracle happened there” but in Israel the last letter is different, to stand for “A great miracle happened here.”

Also in Israel the word for dreidl is “sevivion” (hebrew instead of yiddish) - from Rotemgear.com

Dreidle Penguin

Latkes:
Potato pancakes, also known as kartoffelpuffer or latkes or latkas (Yiddish: לאַטקעס), are shallow-fried cakes of grated potato and egg, often flavoured with grated onion. Potato pancakes may be topped with a variety of condiments, from savoury (sour cream, various cheeses) to sweet (applesauce, sugar with or without cinnamon), but traditionalists prefer them ungarnished. - from Wikipedia

The Star of David:
The Magen David (shield of David, or as it is more commonly known, the Star of David) is the symbol most commonly associated with Judaism today, but it is actually a relatively new Jewish symbol. It is supposed to represent the shape of King David’s shield (or perhaps the emblem on it), but there is really no support for that claim in any early rabbinic literature. In fact, the symbol is so rare in early Jewish literature and artwork that art dealers suspect forgery if they find the symbol in early works. - from The Jewish Virtual Library

Have a wonderful Chanukah!

Cards for a Cure - Art for Breast Cancer Awareness

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

October, as many already know, is Breast Cancer Awareness month. So Tuesdays topic this week is promoting pink!

Thousands of individuals, companies and organizations around the country… and even the world, join together every October to help promote awareness of this wide spanning disease. You’ll find hundreds of t-shirts, pink ribbon products, and fund raising events, each supporting breast cancer awareness at some level.

I personally think this push should be a year round promotion, so this year, I have coordinated a group of designers to joined together a little differently. We’re each dedicating at least one design as a specialty art card - “Cards for a Cure”. Each designer has created art around the theme “pink” and is offering their work as individual greeting cards, large card sets and note card sets.
JGoode Designs will be to BCA charities for every card sold not just from my own designs, but also from designs donated by other participating designers. Throughout the month of October, every time someone buys a card through the provided product listing here at JGD or ShopBCA, I’ll donate .50 per card (card pack donations will be per card as well).

So, why not get involved? Buy an insiring art card and help spread some love this October with a fabulous card with a cause!

Inspirational Reflections and Ripple Effects

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

Every Tuesday I try to come up with a new topic to touch on… 9/11 just happens to fall on Tuesday this year….

I can still remember my experience with 9/11.

I was thousands of miles away from ground zero. I didn’t have any family nor friends nor casual acquaintences from New York let alone remotely involved in the day’s tragic events. Yet, like many others, I stayed glued to my television all day.

I had no idea how this day would impact me personally. I still don’t know all the facets of my life it has touched.

I do know, however, that I promised I would do my part to make each day a little better. At the time of 9/11 I was a single mom relying on public assistance. I was struggling just to make ends meet… but I was trying. Something inside me clicked that day. It instilled a need to try harder, to do more, to reach further, and to make something bigger and better happen in the life that surrounded me.

I can’t even begin to describe the path I then took… I can’t draw a road map for others to follow. Yet, I can share what I have gained.

Now I am married to a wonderfully loving man. I am blessed with 3 beautiful children. I am able to work from home creating my happiness art that not only makes me giggle, but hopefully touches someone else along it’s quirky way. My life inspires my art and through my art I am able to help others by supporting various causes all year .

What a great way to spend my every day!

My life has definitely changed. Can I claim it is all because of 9/11? No. The ripple effect of that day on my life, however, will forever be felt. I will always remember that long day of watching and thinking and personally growing and promising to be better.

Each day I try to remember that life can change in a split second. I often become caught up in the moment and forget the big pictures. Yet, I try to make a daily goal to remember that I can do something better and I can help someone else.

Cards for a Cause

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Hi all,

October will be here before we know it, so I wanted to get a head start and share an idea.
I hope you’ll join in.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - traditionally I create designs sold on a variety of items and most prevalently, t-shirts. I donate the proceeds of these designs to support BCA and I hope I help spread awareness.

This year I’ll be promoting something a little different.

“Send a lil love” to promote BCA.

I will be offering stationery, note cards and greeting cards for sale featuring the theme “Pink”.
Some designed by me, and some by talented designers around the globe.

You’ll find a variety of topics to choose from and a fun selection of “Pink” happiness to share with friends and family.

How YOU can get involved:

Shoppers:
Buy a “Pink” card
I’ll donate .50 to the Susan Komen Foundation

It’s that simple.

Then send your lil’ bit of love to someone special and spread the smiles.

Affiliates:
For JGD affiliates, simply help promote the “Pink” collection and earn your standard commission.
Again I’ll donate .50 per card sold.

YAY PINK!
Watch for this special series to arrive after September 14th.

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

The August 15th earthquake in Peru has tens of thousands displaced, and killed at least 500. Families without shelter nor medical supplies — they need our help. Our good friends over at unEarthedTees.com have started an initiative to help and the penguins and I wanted to join in.

From now through September 30th 2007, when you buy any of these 3 featured penguins, at least 50% of the proceeds will go directly to support Peru Disaster Relief. Today is Colorado Day. Colorado became the 38th U.S. state during this week in 1876. I am a 4th generation with 3 kids — the family’s 5th generation Coloradians. The state’s red river dirt is in our blood.

I’ve moved away and lived in a number of other states over the years, but I always manage to come “back home”. Colorado is where I’m ment to be.

JGD iPhone Experience

Thursday, July 12th, 2007

I recently had the opportunity to check out the new iphone.

I’ve been an avid Mac fan and user for years. When the ipod came out, my husband finally started to see the light. So when he heard about the iphone, it was immediately added to the calendar and the wish-list budget.

Friday, June 29th the ipod was released and my husband was in line with the rest of the eager future owners.

Although I am determined to believe I will never need such a fancy phone, I had to play with this fabu gadget for a few minutes. As always withh mac products, its extremely easy to use. Navigation is nearly second nature to one’s index finger. Click here and you’re scheduling on the calendar. Click Click and you’re mapping out your next trip on an interactive map. Click and wipe over here and you’re surfing the web, swish… zooming in on the details.

After a few minutes of simply poking around, I hopped on over to the web browser and checked out my small corner of the internet. I was completely giddy. My websites, my products, my shopping experience all in the palm of one’s hand. How much more fun can ya get???

4.jpg

A very clean, clear picture.

5.jpg

Zoom in for easier reading.

1.jpg

The penguins look fabulous if i might say so myself ! ;)

Easy shopping…

6.jpg

3.jpg

One other site I had to check out… GoodeGirls.com

2.jpg

I couldn’t be more proud. Even with something so small, Apple seems to make everything look just a little bit better.

Thanks once again for a fabulously fun new must-have.

Breast Cancer Awareness Petition

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Always supporting the cause…

breast-cancer.gifIn January 2007, Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and Representative Rosa L. DeLauro (D-CT) reintroduced the Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2007 (S. 459/H.R.758). The bill would allow a woman and her doctor to decide whether she should recuperate for at least 48 hours. Some insurance companies are trying to limit this to an outpatient procedure… Sending women home mere hours after this difficult experience.

It takes 2 seconds to sign this petition and is very important … You only need to give your name and zip code, please take the time and do it!

Lifetime Television has put this bill on their web page with a petition drive to show your support.

Happy May Day

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

Growing up, May Day was a fun little sneaky kind of day. My friends and I would make little goodie bags filled with candy and tied with pretty bows. Sometimes we’d even pick flowers to include in the gift. We’d then go around the neighborhood knockin on doors and then running to hide while the  recipients found a sweet treat at their doorstep.

candy.gif

I never knew (nor cared) why we participated in such a  sweet lil’ game… it was just something fun to do.

According to an array of resources online, May Day has a variety of purposes, origins and traditions. From political to seasonal to religious, May 1st seems to be important to a huge number of peoples around the globe.

I personally like my version best…

Surprise someone with a treat just because you can; besides, it not only makes someone else smile, you’ll probably giggle a bit too.

Today is World Penguin Day! Celebrate our favorite little birdie pals and take a moment to pass the love on to others.

I Love Penguins

What is World Penguin Day?

“World Penguin Day coincides with the annual northward migration of penguins. This happens each year on or around April 25th. Penguins do not fly. Rather, they walk, or waddle their way to and from.” ~www.holidayinsights.com

Mom is Great!

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

We love our mommas because they have loved us for so long… so I have one thought for all the moms to stand tall and proud:

Some thoughts about mom…

A man’s work is from sun to sun, but a mother’s work is never done. ~Author Unknown

A man loves his sweetheart the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest. ~Irish Proverb

If I had a single flower for every time I think about you, I could walk forever in my garden. ~Attributed to Claudia Ghandi

Mother’s Day is May 13th. JGoode Designs is celebrating moms around the world with a variety of fabulously fun doodles for mom. Check ‘em out!
