Friends

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

I’ve got a lot of different angles on friends these days. My 5 year old is just starting to make his own friends. My 12 year old realizing what a good friend really is. I have friends that I see parting ways and friends holding on dearly to whatever friend they can find… There are friends that are always there no matter how long its been since we last talked. I’ve made many friends and lost many friends over the years… moving around and growing up, changing careers and hobbies, etc. play a big role in where friendships stay. There’s also the new friends that I feel like I’ve known forever and the old friends that are so dear to me every day.

So when I thought “friends” would be a good topic for the daily design… I was amazed to find I only have 2 designs labeled “friend”. What’s up with that? How could I be so all about building relationships and now have more friend fun?

Girl's Best Friend

Wikipedia defines a friend as:

“Friendship is a term used to denote co-operative and supportive behavior between two or more beings… A friend is someone who may often demonstrate reciprocating and reflective behaviors. Yet for many, friendship is nothing more than the trust that someone or something will not harm them.”
That is only a snipped version of the full definition, which turned out to be a surprisingly long and overly technical view on “friend”. wow!

The Urban Dictionary’s topic definition of friend is:

A real friend is someone who:a)it’s okay to fart in front of.

b)you don’t mind talking to on the bus for atleast 20 minutes.

c)can borrow $5 and never has to pay it back

d)you’ll actually call up do stuff.

To me, a friend is many things…

Someone you can trust with your kids and your secrets - someone you don’t mind taking your stinky shoes off in front of - someone you can not only laugh and cry with but also celebrate, brainstorm and confide in. A friend is someone that cheers you on when you need the encouragement but also knows how to kick you in the behind when you need a reality check and a nudge.

What does friend mean to you?

if you have a friend idea, holler!

Summertime Daisy

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

I started out as a doodler, grew into the role of a designer for clients (advertising, print media), morphed with technology into website design and development and then found myself burnt out and unable to draw a single line. That’s when I picked up a camera just so I could add a bit of color back into my day.

This design is a combination of photography and digital design.

Gerber Daisy in Lavendar

I’ve been meaning to create more art like this. I love the combination of organic and geometric with a slightly crafty feel. However, an image has to somehow talk to me for me to create something new out of an already available visual. Lately all I hear are kids and digital noise - wow the world has gotten loud. So for the time being, enjoy this rare bit of art from me. There are others.. if you look for them.

Coffee is Happiness

Friday, June 13th, 2008

This is one of my older designs, and although I haven’t been a coffee drinker for about 2 years, this one still makes me giggle.

Coffee is Happiness

If not for me, for all my friends that still love their morning coffee, I do believe Coffee is Happiness!

Flower Garden Pig

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

This time of year most of my neighbors have already taken a day to plant pretty little beds of flowers. I, however, have taken an hour here and an hour there to do various gardening tasks. I still have 3 backs og mulch waiting to be spread. Packets of seeds waiting to be sowed. Most importantly I now have a lovely wagon full of blooms, still waiting to be planted. It never fails… I think i’ll have time, so i run and buy a handful of flowers I can hardly wait to plant and when I get home I realize I have no time left. Lets hope that Friday will be a good weather day.

Today’s featured design is a sunny green Garden Pig. She’s a pretty little piggy inspired to help bring out the beautiful blooming in any day. She’s available on t-shirts and tanks and even a few tiles.. good for garden decor.

Everything is a little more sunshiney with a pretty little piggy near by… don’t you agree?

Vintage Butterflies for a modern day

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

A year or so ago I went through a phase of needing to create pretty things. Really frilly, girly, ice tea on a hot southern day kind of “old time”, almost Victorian kind of pretty. During that period the Vintage Butterflies was created.

Vintage Butterflies

It’s a combination of real butterfly photos and old ad line drawings intertwined with a Nathanel Hawthorne quote that reads:

Happiness is a butterfly which, when pursued is always beyond our grasp, but, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.

This is the only image of its kind in my current collection. I haven’t found that place in my mind to create another that is inspired in the same way. I have a dear friend that would jump for joy if I created another, and I’ve promised her that one day I will… but for now, the vintage butterflies stand alone in their happy place.

We love corn nuts

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

I just returned from a short little trip. We drove through the heart of cornhusker country - Nebraska Cornerhuskers that is. So, I thought today would be a great day to stand up, do a little cornhusker dance and show off my Corn Nut doodle.

Corn Nut

Originally this design was created with the food in mind… the actual corn nut. However, a few people have read the name a bit differently, and I like it. A nut that is corny, someone that is just funny and goofy and likes wacky, silly things. Or, a big fan of corn - my son is one of those, he loves corn.. the kind you eat.

So if you’re a little nutty or a lot corny or just really like corn… this nut’s for you!

My Garden is My Joy

Monday, May 26th, 2008

This is one of my all time favorite designs. I love the whimsical feel, the bold, bright colors and I love the message. I haven’t created a lot of designs in this theme… but I plan to add more as time permits. Summer is just around the corner and my garden is truly one of my joys!

Peace Sign Doodles

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

One of the very first designs I ever put up for sale that wasn’t, at the time - in my mind, a “real” peace of art… was my doodle peace Love and Happiness design.

Peace , Love and Happiness

Peace , Love and Happiness

I loved the concept and the style, but it was more for me than it was for my online art collection. I needed the light and airy happiness. I need the bright colors and I needed that extra bit of sunshine. Most of all, I needed to share that whole concept….

Amazingly, the peace sign, by itself started to sell quite often. I still am not sure what triggered the interest.. but I’m so glad people found it and liked and it wanted one for themselves.

Peace Sign Doodle

I’ve since added a collection of “Peace, love and happiness” designs… all in the same style. If you’re interested in a version of this design not yet available, let me know!

Monkey! Monkey!

Saturday, May 24th, 2008

I love how many cute monkey characters there are out in the world… so I have created a few of my own. I keep playing with the same basic concept, and every now and again I come up with a variation I really like.

My first monkey was this crazy guy

Cheeky Monkey

Cheeky Monkey

He eventually evolved into a little less chaotic version…

I Love Monkeys

I Love Monkeys

This second guy has a whole pile of fun alternate views for the same character. Monkey dressed in a few dozen different outfits. I really wanted something even more cute for the even younger crowd, so I have been playing with some baby monkey doodles… more about those later.

My first non-doodle that sold

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

When I first started selling my art online, I really wanted to focus on more fine art and photography. I never offered my now favorite doodly designs. I never stopped to consider my doodles worthy of selling. I was a designer… not a doodler.

It’s interesting for me to look back now and see the transition of where my art have been and where it is now. One of my first for-sale images that actually sold was this tulip photo. My sister-in-law made the purchase and I was instantly motivated to keep going. I think she still has it hanging in her kitchen.

The Penguin and a Student Art Show

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

I am all about art and art education and art for the sake of just being creative for 37 seconds. So when I was asked if I could help out with an art show at the Ellen Browning Scripps school in San Diego, I jumped up at the opportunity. The school’s mascot is a penguin, so it was a perfect fit

I created 575 mini buttons and sent them to California this past week.

Each button had a picture of my penguin as the art penguin with the words “creativity is something wonderful” written above. Then, I put each button in a mini jewelry bag and included a card that said…

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” ~ Edgar Degas

“I Believe there is an artist in us all. How or what you choose to create is entirely up to you. I’ve created drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures - big, small and much more. My favorite creations are always those that remind me of a special moment. My life is my art and my art is my life. ” ~ Jennifer Goode • jgoode.com

I spent a few days putting all this penguin fun together, but when it was all done and said it was SO worth it. I was sent some of the most wonderful photos in return. Kids and their art and art by the kids and just art every where. I Love it! It’s so fantastic to me to see what results from a little creative inspiration. Amazing, really amazing.

The art show’s theme was “Thumbs Up for Art”.

The event committee also created a penguin (With my written permission of course) big enough to allow all the students to add their thumb print, creating a group masterpiece. The result was a terrific pointillism penguin.

Check out this wonderful art created by the students…

A special thanks to Tara for asking me to be involved in this fabulous event… thousands of miles away, yet I had a delightful time!

note: these event photos are courtesy of and used with permission by the original photographer.

Penguins Back in Time and World Penguin Day

Friday, April 25th, 2008

I have three brand new penguin designs for last week’s Illustration Friday theme of “primitive”, Caveman Penguin, Cavewoman Penguin, and Primitive penguin art.

caveman, cavewoman and primitive art penguin by jgoode

I had so much fun with the primitive penguin art. It’s a fun new approach that I will be creating more of… stay tuned!

and by the way, did you know… April 25th is World Penguin Day. So, HEY –

HAPPY WORLD PENGUIN DAY!

IF: Save - The Hero Penguin

Friday, April 4th, 2008

This week’s Illustration Friday theme is Save. There are a number of ways I visualize the word “save”, but for today I think the super hero penguin does the trick. He’s all about being there to help, but was originally designed as a fun “icon” to represent being there for your family… “Be a super hero for your kids”. Be fun and bigger than life. Be the protector and the motivator. Be a hero!

Superhero penguin

Every day I strive to do my best, but I’m pretty sure I have plenty of room for improvement. My goal is to have my kids think back and remember happiness.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

I hope the lil’ love fairy passes by your way today!

Lil Love fairy by JGoode

This piece was inspired by my facination for cutie-pie frilly magical characters. I’ve always truly enjoyed the whimsical cuteness of children’s decor. This illustration is my take on what the love fairy would look like… just big enough to carry in your pocket. She carries with her little bits of magic as she dances about - spreading love where ever she goes. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a lil’ love fairy in your day?

I hope your Valentine’s day is extra special!

I love my ol’ blankie

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

This week’s Illustration Friday topic is “blanket”. The first thing that came to mind were the super hero capes and livingroom forts. I loved those snowy days when school was canceled - sitting around pretending the house was an obstacle course and our adventure began with hot cocoa.

If it weren’t for my blankie, I’d have to travel the unknown alone and cold. So my contribution to the topic is the bedtime penguin… complete with mini penguin blankie (and teddy of course).

I still have that old blanket, packaged very carefully in a little ziploc baggie.. shredded with love.

Illustrating Plain

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Illustration Friday’s topic this week is “plain”… of course something yummy came to mind. How could I possibly turn down the opportunity to day dream about ice cream and all that fabulous-ness that it is? The idea… delicious doesn’t have to be fancy.

I call it “Loving Ice Cream”.

I had so much fun with this one that I came up with a few variations… here’s another:

My Secret Santa

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

I just received the best package ever! A week or so ago I posted about a gift I sent for an exchange I signed up for this year… well my gift arrived today and I absolutely love it.

secret-santa.gif

Colleen Maney from Colleen’s Critter Creations sent me the cutest skiing penguin figure, 2 penguin coasters from printfection and the funniest card ever…

The card front has a beautiful dog carrying a santa hat in its mouth (Colleen has some fabulous photography, check it out when you get a chance). The card reads…

“Do you know what happened to santa claus?” and inside it says “I found a way to make the ‘naughty’ list disappear. You may get what you want this year and more!”

HA! ‘Tis the season for some ho ho ho…

Thank you Colleen!!

Blogging Backwards

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

This week’s Illustration Friday topic is “backwards”. I decided an “opposite of normal” kind of backwards instead of doodling a penguins backend… I thought you’d appreciate that.

Either way, the penguin doesn’t look too thrilled… but does it ever?

Illustration Friday: little things

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

This week’s Illustration Friday topic is “little things”. A wide array of ideas came to mind…

“It’s the thought that counts” - seeing as how it’s gift giving season. Or, “don’t sweat the small stuff” - the title of a great follow up to “seven habits of highly effective people” and a great motto to stick in your head from time to time. Or what about, “make a difference one… at a time”? Or a number of other popular quotes, cliche quotes or great thoughts to hold on to. But what kept outnumbering all the rest… tiny toes and tiny fingers. My house is full of them, along with tiny boogers and oodles of tiny messes.

But rather than bore you with a choatic illustration of my family room, I thought the tiny baby penguins would be much cuter and “aw” worthy of a topic like this. So … my visual ode to “little things”:

Playing Santa

Saturday, December 8th, 2007

For the past 3 years I have been lucky enough to be able to participate in a gift exchange with a great group of online friends and peers. We each sign up, include a little bit about what we like, don’t like, favorite colors, art preferences, etc. Each year the group gets a little bigger, the exchange item choices broaden and the fun grows.

giftblog.jpg

gift wrapping is my favorite part

This year my giftee is a fellow designer I was fortunate to meet just over a year ago at a conference hosted by CafePress. Jen Funderburk is the owner, operator and inspirational motivation behind LekkerDesigns.com… one of my all time favorite design shops since I began with Cafepress. I’ve always appreciated the clean images combined with a twist of attitude, it’s like Suzy on the surfer seashore selling snazzy seashells filled with mini shots of your favorite flavor with a retro swizzle. - wink - Always a good time when one browses the Lekker Shops!

lekker.jpg

Now, the idea behind this gift exchange is: send a design gift, something from your own shop/collection or something the recipient might be fond of. I have always taken this opportunity to design specifically for the recipient for this occasion; an item that can’t be purchased by anyone else so its truly a one of a kind. So with that in mind, I was a bit worried about coming up with a design Jen would like. I tend to create fluffy cutie patootie meets Barbie’s little sister with a lollipop… ya know, sometimes ooie gooie and perhaps overly smilie - dontcha think? Some people just aren’t that fluffy.

however …

“Lekker” is dutch for tasty, enjoyable or delicious - I can grasp that, so I grabbed a pile of critters and ran with an idea - I plowed forward regardless of my worries… and here’s the result.

giftblog3.jpg

and a teeny tiny original JGoode penguin charm

I love the holiday season. For me it’s not about the gifts and the shopping or the parties or the food… it’s about the people and the giving and the potential for an unexpected grin - or 5. - speaking of, I sent this gift with no note of the gift exchange - leaving Jen to wonder why I sent the package, ha! silly me… sometimes Santa forgets too I’m sure.

The Penguin Goes to the Art Show

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Since I began selling my doodle art online, I’ve had a side goal to try to help promote various causes through my art. 25749293993691.jpg

As time has gone on, the Penguin cartoon collection has turned into the perfect avenue for such promotion. I started with the Pink Ribbon penguin, supporting breast cancer awareness, and expanded into a number of additional causes.

wfh.jpg

This past October I met an indie jewelry designer named Pam Swider, the owner and operator of Women for Hope. She was hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness group promotion effort called Indie for Awareness and I jumped with excitement to get involved. After the October event, Pam asked if I would consider creating penguins featuring a number of cancer and health related support ribbons.

“Absolutely!” I replied. How can I turn down an opportunity to help?

Once the penguins were created, I sent the Teal Ribbon Penguin to Pam. She then wore it to an art show she partiicpated in, and here they are sitting quite pretty!

women-for-hope-blog2.jpg
In addtion to a huge selection of beautiful jewelry for all occasions, Pam creates and sells a number of support jewlery items including: “Bracelets, earrings, necklaces, keychains and cell phone charms in support of 15 different causes from Breast Cancer to Sexual Assault Awareness”.

blog-earrings.jpg

The really inspiring thing is, not only are these items hand crafted, made with love by someone who understands the turmoil and emotional strain associated with the issues these items represent… but 10% of the proceeds sold by Women of Hope is donated to a variety of charities supporting womens’ issues. Giving from the hand that creates; it’s such a fabulous full circle kind of love.

Last I heard, The Penguin was delighted to join the gang at the art show. Thanks so much! I’m honored to work with someone as wonderful and giving as Pam.

Mini Stocking Stuffers

Sunday, December 2nd, 2007

Mini buttons make fantastic stocking stuffers, and here at JGD, there are oodles and oodles of mini buttons! Find all your favorites - penguins, dragonflies, big grins and goofy giggles. The kids love to stick mini buttons on backpacks, jackets and binders. Kids also like to trade and share their mini buttons, so grab a few designs that they can swap with their pals too.

buttonblog.jpg

Mini buttons do have a sharp pin point, so I don’t recommend giving mini buttons to children under the age of 6 or 7.

Other fun stocking stuffer ideas available through JGoode designs are: standard buttons, round magnets, teddy bears and note cards and thank you cards.

Vote for the Silly Mug

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

Zazzle is having another contest and the penguins and I are there to try for another fun adventure. The topic this time around is office humor… working from home on my own doesn’t leave much room for the water-cooler joke experience. I do think, however that the penguins make me giggle all day long, so it’s worth a shot.

I’d love your vote too. You do have to log in as a member of zazzle to vote.

A JGoode Siting on Miley?

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

I recently found a fairly unknown JGoode Design on a fan site for Miley Cyrus… seriously!

The site, dresslikemiley.com, features outfits Miley (Hannah Montana) wears and then offers suggestions of products so viewers can create a similar outfit.

The brown Vintage Butterfly women’s tank was featured as part of a fabulous fall ensemble.

I’m especially excited because I not only know who Miley is, but actually watch Hannah Montona with my boys from time to time.  It’s fun to see one of my creations associated with a name I know.

The tank has been paired with a jacket and distressed jeans making it an outfit perfect for any weather.

The Penguins Win Honorable Mention at Zazzle

Friday, November 16th, 2007

I entered a contest at Zazzle a few weeks ago. The contest was to design a greeting card template (a template allows buyers to customize the card). There were literally 100s of entries ranging from cute and fun to beautiful and inspiring. There’s a fabulous array of talent at Zazzle these days.

azzlelogo.jpg

My entry was a Christmas themed penguin scene, (penguins? who woulda thunk?), complete with Mr. and Mr.s Claus, Rudolph and the elves. It was a lot of fun to  create.

Now the votes are in and they say the penguins and I earned an Honorable Mention… YAY!

Thank you all who voted and left comments. I appreciate every speck of support — and contests are a lot more fun when our friends stop by.

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

While I sit here, the first snow of the season begins to think it’s own melting. Yet Illustration Friday’s topic for the week is “grow”. So, my illustration for the week is the Spring Garden Penguin.

Cards for a Cause

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

Hi all,

October will be here before we know it, so I wanted to get a head start and share an idea.
I hope you’ll join in.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - traditionally I create designs sold on a variety of items and most prevalently, t-shirts. I donate the proceeds of these designs to support BCA and I hope I help spread awareness.

This year I’ll be promoting something a little different.

“Send a lil love” to promote BCA.

I will be offering stationery, note cards and greeting cards for sale featuring the theme “Pink”.
Some designed by me, and some by talented designers around the globe.

You’ll find a variety of topics to choose from and a fun selection of “Pink” happiness to share with friends and family.

How YOU can get involved:

Shoppers:
Buy a “Pink” card
I’ll donate .50 to the Susan Komen Foundation

It’s that simple.

Then send your lil’ bit of love to someone special and spread the smiles.

Affiliates:
For JGD affiliates, simply help promote the “Pink” collection and earn your standard commission.
Again I’ll donate .50 per card sold.

YAY PINK!
Watch for this special series to arrive after September 14th.

Making Lemonade

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Seems to me every down is an opportunity to create and up. Oh yes, the concept is sooo much easier when all you have to do is talk about it. But, seriously, there’s usually some kind of moment of “ahh”.. which inspired my new lemonade designs:
