Meet the Chef Penguin

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Lately, in my house, we’ve been cooking a lot. Tons of celebrations and cakes and family and food. We love to cook together, especially banana bread. So I thought a great way to start “today’s featured design” would be to start out with our little friend the Chef penguin

The Penguin and a Student Art Show

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

I am all about art and art education and art for the sake of just being creative for 37 seconds. So when I was asked if I could help out with an art show at the Ellen Browning Scripps school in San Diego, I jumped up at the opportunity. The school’s mascot is a penguin, so it was a perfect fit

I created 575 mini buttons and sent them to California this past week.

Each button had a picture of my penguin as the art penguin with the words “creativity is something wonderful” written above. Then, I put each button in a mini jewelry bag and included a card that said…

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” ~ Edgar Degas

“I Believe there is an artist in us all. How or what you choose to create is entirely up to you. I’ve created drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures - big, small and much more. My favorite creations are always those that remind me of a special moment. My life is my art and my art is my life. ” ~ Jennifer Goode • jgoode.com

I spent a few days putting all this penguin fun together, but when it was all done and said it was SO worth it. I was sent some of the most wonderful photos in return. Kids and their art and art by the kids and just art every where. I Love it! It’s so fantastic to me to see what results from a little creative inspiration. Amazing, really amazing.

The art show’s theme was “Thumbs Up for Art”.

The event committee also created a penguin (With my written permission of course) big enough to allow all the students to add their thumb print, creating a group masterpiece. The result was a terrific pointillism penguin.

Check out this wonderful art created by the students…

A special thanks to Tara for asking me to be involved in this fabulous event… thousands of miles away, yet I had a delightful time!

note: these event photos are courtesy of and used with permission by the original photographer.

Heading to Seattle for 3 Days of Walking

Friday, April 25th, 2008

The penguin and I will be participating in a Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-day walk In September, 2008. It’s 3 days walking 60 miles and loads of pink!

I have joined up with a fabulous group, Affiliate Marketers Give Back to help raise funds for the cure and I’m taking the penguin with me. We’re so excited to get involved this year!

I will be blogging about my experiences along the way including my adventures in training - it’s amazing how many muscles there are in my body that I don’t use regularly when I sit at this computer. I had no idea! They will all be in shape by September, I promise! I will even try to add in some videos from time to time — be prepared, I am not a professional film maker.

I’d love you to get involved and support me in this journey!

You can sponsor me by visiting my special donation page

Net proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust, funding important breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment. Every dollar helps - I would really love all the support I can get!

Not much to say,
except YAY and HooRay!
It’s president’s day

Athough
There’s no cake to pass out,
we’ll still sing and shout

I love my ol’ blankie

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

This week’s Illustration Friday topic is “blanket”. The first thing that came to mind were the super hero capes and livingroom forts. I loved those snowy days when school was canceled - sitting around pretending the house was an obstacle course and our adventure began with hot cocoa.

If it weren’t for my blankie, I’d have to travel the unknown alone and cold. So my contribution to the topic is the bedtime penguin… complete with mini penguin blankie (and teddy of course).

I still have that old blanket, packaged very carefully in a little ziploc baggie.. shredded with love.

The Penguin Goes to the Art Show

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Since I began selling my doodle art online, I’ve had a side goal to try to help promote various causes through my art. 25749293993691.jpg

As time has gone on, the Penguin cartoon collection has turned into the perfect avenue for such promotion. I started with the Pink Ribbon penguin, supporting breast cancer awareness, and expanded into a number of additional causes.

wfh.jpg

This past October I met an indie jewelry designer named Pam Swider, the owner and operator of Women for Hope. She was hosting a Breast Cancer Awareness group promotion effort called Indie for Awareness and I jumped with excitement to get involved. After the October event, Pam asked if I would consider creating penguins featuring a number of cancer and health related support ribbons.

“Absolutely!” I replied. How can I turn down an opportunity to help?

Once the penguins were created, I sent the Teal Ribbon Penguin to Pam. She then wore it to an art show she partiicpated in, and here they are sitting quite pretty!

women-for-hope-blog2.jpg
In addtion to a huge selection of beautiful jewelry for all occasions, Pam creates and sells a number of support jewlery items including: “Bracelets, earrings, necklaces, keychains and cell phone charms in support of 15 different causes from Breast Cancer to Sexual Assault Awareness”.

blog-earrings.jpg

The really inspiring thing is, not only are these items hand crafted, made with love by someone who understands the turmoil and emotional strain associated with the issues these items represent… but 10% of the proceeds sold by Women of Hope is donated to a variety of charities supporting womens’ issues. Giving from the hand that creates; it’s such a fabulous full circle kind of love.

Last I heard, The Penguin was delighted to join the gang at the art show. Thanks so much! I’m honored to work with someone as wonderful and giving as Pam.

The Penguins Win Honorable Mention at Zazzle

Friday, November 16th, 2007

I entered a contest at Zazzle a few weeks ago. The contest was to design a greeting card template (a template allows buyers to customize the card). There were literally 100s of entries ranging from cute and fun to beautiful and inspiring. There’s a fabulous array of talent at Zazzle these days.

azzlelogo.jpg

My entry was a Christmas themed penguin scene, (penguins? who woulda thunk?), complete with Mr. and Mr.s Claus, Rudolph and the elves. It was a lot of fun to  create.

Now the votes are in and they say the penguins and I earned an Honorable Mention… YAY!

zazzle.jpg

Thank you all who voted and left comments. I appreciate every speck of support — and contests are a lot more fun when our friends stop by.

You can purchase this card and customize with your own photo and text greetings here.

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

My (almost) 5 year old son has been asking for weeks if I would make a mailman penguin. He loves Mr. Mailman, a character on one of the pre-k programs he watches. So, I finally sat down and completed the request. Just remember, your mail carrier might just like penguins too. - wink.

Tuesdays Topic - The Boss

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Today is Boss Day, the day every employee can stop and say “hey thanks for being a great boss”… assuming the boss is great, and assuming we need a single day for the opportunity…

But what about those of us that are our own boss, the self employed? Do I pat myself on the back and say, “hey thanks me, I’m so glad I’m great”? Ha!

I’m the Boss

No, I’d prefer to stop and say “WOW, look where I am” and then thank all the people who supported my ideas or written letters telling me they love the designs. Thank YOU for the encouragement. It’s a fabulous feeling to have an idea, be able to go ahead and pursue the concept and the result is customers who like the idea as well. That’s the drive behind the shop. Thank you for the motivation and Happy Boss day, boss!

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

I’ve recently joined club penguin. My love for the flightless bird has instilled a curiosity about anything penguin. I also have 2 children that are determined to spend the majority of their inside time playing something, somewhere on the computer, so I am always looking for new and better avenues for them to try.

goodepenguin.gifNow, I find that a good chunk of my kids’ play time is no longer game sites I don’t understand. They’d much rather run around an ice covered world filled with  our penguin pals — AND it’s ok for me to run right alongside. We play games, shop for clothes and igloo accesories — hunt for hidden treasures and even just hang out together. What a great idea! It’s fantastically fun to be able to get involved in activities that they’d otherwise like to explore alone.

More great info… a wonderful article about ClubPenguin.

The August 15th earthquake in Peru has tens of thousands displaced, and killed at least 500. Families without shelter nor medical supplies — they need our help. Our good friends over at unEarthedTees.com have started an initiative to help and the penguins and I wanted to join in.

Are the penguins stepping on corporate toes?

Monday, February 12th, 2007

Currently a fairly large, well estiblished corporate entity is accusing the JGoode “artic bird” of infringing… on the word penguin. Or maybe it’s infringing on being a penguin. I’m not quite sure. It’s all *hearsay* ya know… suppozebly.

blog.jpg

I’m sorry to say it, but I’m actually truly confused. This poor little birdy has no other name.. does it? Maybe something in latin, I’m not sure. I could translate to spanish or french.. or anything but english, if that made a difference couldn’t I?

Do big corporations have the right to own an entire species of animal just because it’s on a t-shirt? Can anyone legally monopolize the market in any given area when the word is common language?

I would think if full ownership regardless of font, features and location were possible, Duncan would not be making doughnuts, Olive’s Garden would be blooming of pasta a little less.. Bad Girl would prevent any other company from selling an image of a rule breaking female on a shirt… and the Old would be out of a Navy because the military doesnt need to be associated with young girls wearing capris and smilie commercials.
blogg2.jpgThere are plenty of other penguins out there… on apparel no less. What are they being called, if not the bird they are? How do they look if they are in fact penguins… like doughnuts?

Where is the line drawn (in theory) when it comes to common use, and common law first use?

How sad would it be to lose an entire population of penguins, just because Mr. CorpUn-named likes to bully and attempt to scare competition away. (Competition!? Confusing you with who? says Mr. JGoode. -wink-)

It’s disheartening, this unexpected situation at hand, I have penguins to doodle and sculpt and dream up… yet the battle needs to be fought. When one does wrong, they need to correct their mistakes, but when one is accused of wrong they didn’t do… one must just hope the right people are listening.

- cross yer fingers.

I’ll keep you posted.

- in the meantime, i’d love your comments. what do you think?

Vote Penguin!

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

Vote Penguin.jpgFrontier Airlines is now running a “Who’s Your Favorite Animal” campaign. Visitors can vote for their favorite plane tail critter to represent. I’m not sure if its just for Denver’s favorite animal or varies by city.

Obviously I’m going to have a biased opinion here. I mean, I love them all.. but hey, I say go for the penguins, and my penguin pal is always trying to gain new support… so go vote Penguins!
Frontier has put together a pretty cool presentation for the whole event. Not only can you vote, but you can view each candidate’s mini platform, campaign spots and buy limited edition gear. How fun is that??

Check it all out… Go to the virtual campaign headquarters…

frontiervote1.jpg

then… vote for your favorite animal (penguins, penguins penguins!!)
frontiervote2.jpg

pssst.. vote for the penguins.

You can even see who’s winning and where your vote stands.

frontiervote3.jpg

The penguins need a boost right now.. so come on.. vote! (please)

Just for kicks, there’s also a forum, but it seems somewhat lacking. It’s more of a comment board than anything. However, it’s entertaining for about 47 second, so check that out too while you’re there.

So.. happy penguin voting!

Penguins Give Me Happy Feet!

Monday, November 20th, 2006

Hi-dee-ho, time to go.. laugh and giggle and play in the snow…

original designs by JGoode at myJGD.comHave YOU seen Happy Feet? It’s the newest family film.. a much anticipated piece of entertainment on our family list. Happy Feet is a dance-tastic, musically fun, computer animated comedy from GEORGE Miller featuring penguins… singing and tap dancing penguins. Wooo hoo, and you know WE love penguins!

Although the film opened in US theaters this past weekend, we haven’t had the opportunity to experience the fun just yet.

Movies.com reports Happy Feet to be this week’s box office leader and gives an overall grade of B.

The Australian predicts “Happy Feet is on track to become the most popular Australian film”

If you’d like to read up a bit more on this fabu flick… don’t assume happyfeet.com is your destination. As it turns out, happyfeet.com is a shoe company, which, by the way, is featuring a fun penguin inspired contest in partnership (so it seems) with WBMovies…

Instead, check out movie info at http://www2.warnerbros.com/happyfeet/ - here you’ll also find a cool webcam of the Baltimore Maryland Zoo penguins, Free Hallmark e-cards, movie trailer and more.

Hip Hip and a big One Red Paperclip T-shirt HooRay!

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

So about a week ago, the penguin became a part of an elborate scene as my contribution to the project. Kyle challenged anyone listening to come up with a t-shirt design to represent the story. So I sat down and doodled…

Heres a small version of the image:

JGoode Design's One Red Paperclip T-shirt submission.

Now get this coolness…
Today, to my surprise, I discovered the made it to the winners circle.

NO WAY!!! ( I really did say)

I think I reloaded the page at least 10 times to make sure it wasn’t some funky typo. Sure enough, every time the page loaded, The Penguin was still surfin’ along on the page. So just to make sure I haven’t gone crazy, check it out for yourself.

Cool huh?!!!

I’d like to thank Kyle for the opportunity to expand my horizon as far as creative thinking goes. It was a blast of a project to work on, and I had a load of fun creating the design… but better still, it’s a huge huge rush, to work on something with no known outcome and then be surprised with such a happy Hooray!

I’d also like to thank everyone for lovin’ the penguin… (that includes YOU, right now).
absolutely loves YOU too!

NameThePenguin.com Goes Live

Tuesday, July 18th, 2006

The New JGoode Penguin site has officially been launched…

JGoode Designs has recently released a new cartoon character. The public is invited to participate in naming the newly created penguin representing the collection.

Castle Rock, Colorado July 18, 2006 Colorado

Designer/Artist Jen Goode, of JGoode Designs, has released a new cartoon collection of penguin personalities. Each funny penguin is dressed in a costume which represents a different interest, sport, activity or personality. Each “personality” designed to fit various “people personalities”.

“I try to create designs that represent who we each are, what we love and what we enjoy to do most.” - JGoode

In addition to the new cartoon character, an interactive website was launched to introduce the penguin and invite the public to get involved in naming the character.

NameThePenguindotCom.jpgName The Penguin (http://www.NameThePenguin.com) officially opened July 18th, 2006.

NameThePenguin.com challenges visitors to suggest a name, vote for their favorite name and comment on names submitted by others. Live updates, an email mailing list, as well as “send-a-friend” additions allow visitors to get their friends and family involved in Naming the Penguin.

“It never occurred to me that the penguin actually needed a name. Yet, so many people have asked me what the name is that I thought maybe I should ask them back. Each penguin personality inspires different people in different ways. I decided it would be best to find out what the public thinks it’s name is… so here I am, asking for input.” - JGoode

Open public participation will end August 15th, 2006.

Voting and name submissions are available now by going to the Name the Penguin website at: http://www.NameThePenguin.com.

The original JGoode penguin began as a single, confused looking bird “doodle” illustration. After 6 months of playing with different ideas, the funny bird has been expanded to what is now a growing 50+ personality collection and 2000+ product catalog.

JGoode Designs ( http://www.jgoodedesigns.com ) offers an online store where the penguin character may be purchased. Each personality is available on t-shirts and novelty gifts, and patrons may also request their own personalized penguin.

Meet the Affiliates

Sunday, July 16th, 2006

affiliatePenguin.jpgThe Penguin made its first official public appearance in Orlando this past week.

July 7-13 I was attending for the second time this year. Hundreds of affiliate marketers mingled with merchants from around the world. The penguin popped it’s head early at the event, featured on a magnet designed by yours truly (JGoode).
After 4 days of networking, listening, and learning, I walked away with piles of new ideas and great new friends.

I attended the January Affiliate Summit, held in Vegas, with the goal of learning about the industry. I had no idea what I was doing there nor what I would take home with me, I just knew I wanted to know more.

I met many great people who eagerly filled my head with excitement for this growing industry. I had such an excellent experience that I returned for the next event held in Orlando the second week of July.

This time, I went with the idea of introducing myself, my doodles and maybe my brand.

I came home with a new insight of myself.

The penguin magnet was my promotional star, my “brilliant” idea for hollering “here I am!”. It accompanied information about as a company and the . All items were carefully packaged in a cute little “Goodie Bag from JGoode” with an addition (of course) of candy. To my surprise (why I was surprised, I still haven’t figured out) the reaction was always, “cool…” scope out the bag for a moment, “OH YAY, Smarties!!”.

Little handfuls of such a simply classic treat seemed to open the door to a number of conversations. I chatted with top professionals about an array of topics ranging from basic marketing techniques to personal experiences that brought them into the industry. Not all conversations began with the penguin nor due to the free treats. However, that little “extra step” of showing up with something to give with nothing expected in return… that one act, I believe helped my attitude and confidence to approach the unknown.

Since I’ve been home, I’ve been able to stop and pull out all the information I crammed into my brain. I am sorting through, trying organize and apply what I’ve learned. Most importantly I am reaching out to explore areas of marketing I was previously intimidated to consider.

The knowledge I gained through the experiences and people at the Affiliate Summit have given me a new direction to follow. I have a clearer vision for where I’d like to be and how I’d like to get there. I would not, today, be inspired by these great ideas of “where to go from here” had I not been at this event.

What started out as a fun - give them a cute penguin magnet - has turned into a “promote the penguin” plan.

Wow, how I love when things surprise me!
